New Road Mortality Project Gets Underway

5/26/2013

Dr. Cohen and M.S. student Maureen Durkin have received funding through the National Park Service to undertake a study that aims to quantify wildlife road mortality at Gulf Islands National Seashore in Florida. Maureen is currently in the field conducting road surveys for shorebird, small mammal, and reptile and amphibian mortality on roads within the park. She is also using experimental carcasses to estimate persistence and detection of shorebird mortalities. This study will provide initial testing of field methods for quantifying road mortality, plus help to inform management for coastal species that are in close proximity to the park roads.  In addition to this new study, she will continue her previous two years of Snowy Plover monitoring through resighting and color banding.
